What RIR Actually Measures
Reps In Reserve is a simple question: how many more reps could you have done before failure? Rack the bar with two clean reps left in the tank, that set was 2 RIR. Grind to a near-miss, that was 0 RIR.
RIR anchors intensity to proximity to failure, not to a number on a percentage chart. Proximity to failure is what actually drives the stimulus of a set. Two lifters can move the same weight and get completely different training effects depending on how close each one was to failing.
Why Fixed Percentages Fail
Percentage-based programs assume your 1RM is a constant. It isn't. Sleep debt, work stress, poor recovery, and accumulated fatigue can swing your usable strength meaningfully from session to session.
On a low-readiness day, that prescribed 80% might behave like 88%. You either grind sets you were never meant to grind, or you miss reps entirely. Both outcomes pile on fatigue without adding stimulus. Repeat that for a few weeks and the program collapses under junk volume and stalled lifts.
RIR sidesteps the problem. A target of "5 reps at 2 RIR" self-corrects: on a strong day the load creeps up, on a rough day it drops. The stimulus stays constant. The weight is just the output.
Calibrating Your RIR Estimates
Untrained estimates run optimistic. Most lifters think they're at 2 RIR when they're closer to 4. Tighten your calibration like this:
- Take controlled sets to actual failure occasionally on safe accessory movements, then compare against what you predicted.
- Track bar speed. A sharp slowdown between reps is your most honest signal that reserve is running out.
- Estimate RIR immediately after every working set and log it. Accuracy is a skill built through reps of the skill itself.
- Trust your estimates more within 0-3 RIR. Beyond that range, everyone guesses.
Expect solid calibration within a few weeks of deliberate practice. Compound lifts take longer than isolation work.
